◎ Character's Name: IV (Thomas Arclight)
◎ Character's Canon: Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal (anime)
◎ Character's Age: 17
◎ Canon Point: Post-episode 126
◎ Background/History: Here
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? No
◎ Personality: “Fanservice” is his motto! IV is a popular figure in the dueling arena, a national champion lauded as the most gentlemanly of his peers. Meeting him is considered a great privilege by his fans, who incidentally believe he can do no wrong. After all, there’s no reason to suspect someone so soft-spoken, considerate, and generous with praises. If anything, he was the victim of cheating during the National Duel Circuit. Such are the perks of playing the sweet guy. His public image couldn’t be any further from the truth.
What lurks under IV’s gentle smile is a wild child who excels in acting. He’s neither soft-spoken nor considerate, but loud and unsympathetic. While it’s clear that he revels in his fans’ presence, his opinions of said fans bizarrely range from contempt (they’re incompetent duelists) to fondness (they pay attention to him). The praise he so readily lavishes them with is more or less pretense, segueing into what he calls “true fanservice,” which is as absurd as it sounds and equates to trampling on their hopes by ruthlessly crushing them in a duel. By those who have witnessed this paradoxical behavior, IV’s true colors are likened to the devil. But like most things, there's a story to his devilry.
Growing up in a loving family, IV was happy until misfortune came knocking like the freaky birthday clown with his father’s disappearance. He bore this tragedy in a recurring display of toughness as he held back his tears when sent to a facility. Even in the present, IV never cries on screen in contrast to his younger brother. To a point, he was and remains resilient, bouncing back from one trial after another in the hopes of reuniting his family (the dog is optional), but that isn't to say he went through the events of his childhood and those following unscathed.
Ill-equipped to cope with his “inhuman” actions on Toron's quest for revenge, the amount of guilt IV has amassed in his role as a lackey is staggering. His self-reproach generally translates into anger and then spite, propelling him to drag others down with him in a fit of madness. His “true fanservice,” during which he frequently raves about hell, can be thought the foremost application of this in his efforts to vent.
As a four-time duel champion, IV takes pride bigger than his hair can handle in his accomplishments. Unfortunately, his pride has the habit of clouding his judgment. Criticism sits poorly with IV, who’s ruled by his heart. His need for recognition births a great deal of defensiveness that culminates in stupid, rebellious decisions; like gambling against luck and getting his arse bitten by probability in a duel. While he can stand to curb some of that excessive pride, it does empower him through confidence in his abilities as an exceptional duelist.
However, when in better control of his faculties, IV does use his head. He isn't above scheming by luring the other party to a disadvantageous field in a duel, and his prime strategy to disarm them is provocation. Oftentimes, he knows which buttons to push and keep on pressing. IV’s loose lips and disregard for what comes out of his mouth, while considered weaknesses by Toron, help him excel at taunting. On the flip side, they also make him embarrassing as hell to be around on his saner days, because he's shameless in these respects.
With the revenge quest over, IV has simmered down considerably and learned the value of camaraderie after entrusting his family to Ryoga. Of course, believing in someone doesn’t change a person overnight. IV is no less rough than before, being undeniably clumsy at expressing affection, if not emotions as a whole; however, he acknowledges his shortcomings by stating that he knows he's being harsh when he yells at the one person he considers a friend, no matter his intentions. For him, the willingness to communicate openly to this extent, though still a long ways from ideal and fairly roundabout in execution, is a huge leap from where he had once grit his teeth in his bottled and subsequently explosive rage.
With the Arclights reunited in the proper fashion (the dog is still optional), IV is a happier person in better control of his temper. His fanservice is now, for the most part, harmless. To be sure, he gets carried away by his impatience with idiocy or his competitive side, but that's far from the product of mounting stress. In any case, family is and has always been important to IV: Although he says that he isn't as faithful a servant as V and III, his loyalty to Toron is irrefutable. Having his brothers and father back under a supportive household has without a doubt done his mentality wonders.
◎ Powers/Abilities:Turning food into charcoal. IV is ordinary despite his habit of jumping down from questionable heights without breaking bones.
IV wears a bracelet of V's making that imitates a crest of Varian origin he once possessed. The bracelet enables AR Vision and D-Gazer capacity (augmented reality duels of Zexal require this technology to view them; IV's appears as a tattoo over his left eye), as well as immunity to and extraction of Numbers. Outside of a duel, it detects Varian signals and communicates with others of its model, which V and III own. When used together, the bracelets resonate to erect a Sphere Field with the intent of trapping those within its range.
◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory: Bracelet
CEREALIA-Specific
◎ Element: Fire
◎ Sense: Sight - He likes to see the other party's expressions during a duel, and the scar on his face serves as a visual reminder of what he's done.
◎ Seven Character Traits: ( loyal, proud, willful ) | ( brazen, hot-blooded, impulsive ) + devious
Samples
◎ First-Person Sample: [The instant the network connects, IV's words tumble out like a long, exaggerated sigh:] Good grief, that took some time.
[The sound of cards shuffling fills in the following silence. It hadn't been a matter of merely collecting cards. There's no way he would sacrifice quality for the sake of running with quantity. Only an amateur would make such a novice mistake. And he's had enough of slips.
The shuffling ceases.]
How about it? My deck's finally ready. Those of you who know what that means can come and find me. [There's the sound of a machine clicking and setting into place. This duel disk sure is bulky in length.] It's been long enough since I last dueled.
[Frankly, all the kids running around with duel disks and elaborate decks has been driving him up the wall. Now he doesn't have to feel like he's missing an arm. Despite himself, there's been a hint of impatience in his tone this whole time. It really has been too long, and he's a lot more eager than he's letting on.]
Anyway, I'll be waiting!
◎ Third-Person Sample: After all the grief and struggle against the Varians back home, it figured that he'd have to put up now with a missing deck and duel disk. As if he couldn't have just brought them along when the bracelet came with him, but he supposed that was where the line had been drawn. He sighed, drawing out the exhalation. He could always replace his deck in Cerealia and make do. Losing the Numbers (again) would have wrecked his current deck, anyway. Still, the matter of building a deck from the ground up was a lengthy process, and one that, frankly, left a bitter taste in his mouth.
He sat up on the sofa, which was as bare as it had been on his arrival, save the cushions lined against the armrests. Decor was sparse. Tempting as HOLO(gm) was, he was scraping together credits for his missing inventory. A prolific champion like him shouldn't be caught without his assets. But, more than that, it was like he was missing a part of himself. He'd only just gotten stronger, and that hadn't been enough to change fate. Instead, he'd been stripped of that power in its entirety, leaving him to fight for it back.
"It's about that time again," he said airily, pushing off the sofa and swiping the CereVice off the empty coffee table before him.
It was a small fortune that acquiring credits in Cerealia was a rewarding process. He fought; he earned. Eventually, he'd have a solid deck to work on a duel disk, even if he got stuck with a rudimentary model. If he had to go for much longer without them – well, there was no "if" to consider.
The walk to the Entertainment District was as uneventful as ever, at least comparing some elements from home. He wasn't famous here. There were no fans, not even rivals (really, who was even worthy of that besides the one?). Nobody for whom to be Duel Champion IV. It wasn't a bad transition. He had no desire to get attached to this world, although being here did confirm one thing: He thought he'd perished, but according to CERES' explanation regarding his and so many others' presence, his own fate might not have been so linear, after all.
Soon.
IV looked up as he neared his destination, his expression grim but lips curling into a wry smirk.
"My fanservice isn't over yet."
