CANON & HISTORY: Tales of Berseria
A malak who once lived his life in peace with his sister, Edna, he set out in search of a cure once he realized that his blessing brought misfortune to those near him. His journey took him aboard the Van Eltia, a ship that soon fell under the leadership of Aifread, a pirate who took Eizen on as his first mate. When the Opening and the Advent amplified resonance within humans, Aifread's crew gained the ability to perceive Eizen, who'd fallen in love with the romantic lifestyle of a seafarer.
His story begins with the disappearance of Aifread.
In order to cross the fort preventing the crew from reaching Midgand, Eizen enlists the aid of Velvet and her companions—Laphicet, Rokurou, and Magilou—due to insufficient manpower. Their temporary partnership grows into a long-term agreement when they learn that the Abbey is responsible for Aifread's disappearance, which places Eizen on the parallel path to that of Velvet's, who wishes to exact vengeance upon its leader.
Fed intelligence by the underworld's Bloodwing Butterflies, the party seeks out Artorius at the Empyrean's Throne. To dispel the barrier protecting the throne, they temporarily recruit Zaveid, a malak who warns Eizen not to delve too deeply into Aifread's case lest someone wind up dead. The party suffers a humiliating defeat at Artorius' hands and escapes to the earthpulse torn open by Laphicet.
With the exorcist Eleanor in tow as Laphicet's new vessel, the party makes their way to return to the Van Eltia, narrowly avoiding a clean death at the hands of Shigure, Rokurou's brother and another exorcist from the Abbey. To strike Artorius where it would be most effective, they investigate the Empyrean the Abbey has been promoting to the masses: Innominat. Based on an ancient text translated by Magilou's friend, Grimoirh, the party sets out to collect the Therions created by the Abbey to interfere with Empyrean's awakening.
The party hides the Therions away within the safe confines of Titania, the prison island where Velvet was once imprisoned. At the same time, Eleanor confesses her duplicitous mission and vows to walk her own path, solidifying her place in the group.
Amid the search for Therions, the party encounters a dragon: Zaveid's lover, Theodora, who had soaked in too much malevolence from the humans she had loved so. Eizen attempts to kill Theodora but is summarily stopped by Zaveid, and Velvet lectures him on endangering everyone with his recklessness.
The text Grimoirh has been translating is incomplete. A complete version sits in a bookshelf in Velvet's home, but an illusion cast over her village by the exorcist Melchior threatens to lull her into false complaisance. Eizen presents her with the ultimatum of being left behind or going forward with their mission. After spotting an inconsistency in the fake reality, Velvet breaks the illusion and Melchior emerges with a peculiar daemon that Eizen suspects is Aifread. While Melchior leaves with the complete copy of the text, Laphicet discovers a copy that Velvet's deceased brother had made.
While Girmoirh translates the missing pages, the party confronts Oscar, an exorcist guarding one of the last remaining Therions. Oscar uses the Abbey's forbidden arte, the armatus, by fusing himself with his malak, and eventually self-destructs from its overuse. In a hostage situation gone awry, Eizen then fails to stop Velvet from killing Oscar's sister in self-defense.
The party rushes back to Titania upon news of a full-scale invasion by the Abbey. Irritated by Velvet's increasingly destructive and selfish plans, Eizen attempts to abandon her as bait when Artorius reveals that Innominat has already awoken with the form of Velvet's brother. Laphicet rescues the party by engulfing them within the earthpulse once more; however, the earthpulse is now Innominat's vessel, forcing them on a run for safety.
In spite of Eizen's alleged indifference toward Velvet's stability, he saves her from being consumed by Innominat and demands that Laphicet call her out on her conceit. Velvet then regains her drive, and everyone escapes through a portal maintained by Magilou.
Meanwhile, the Van Eltia's crew has fallen victim to a trap set by the Abbey, using Aifread as the bait and executioner. Cursing his initial hesitation, Eizen realizes that Aifread is no longer himself and kills him to destroy the shackles imposed on him by Melchior. With his dying breath, Aifread reveals that Innominat's domain will weaken with the awakening of the four elemental Empyreans.
The party heads to Mount Killaraus to awaken the Empyreans while Innominat's Ceremony of Suppression sweeps across the lands, robbing the people of their emotions. There, Melchior reveals that Innominat exists to reset the sinful civilization that has forgotten to offer the Empyreans their prayers, and that Artorius intends to steer the people toward an era of reason by controlling Innominat. After defeating Melchior, the party turns their attention to the skies, where Innominat has taken with the awakened Empyreans stifling his domain.
Eizen learns that, by devouring the heart of a dragon, he can potentially cure his curse; however, he declines to do so in lieu of putting Theodora out of her misery. The malevolence exuded by Theodora has tainted him, insofar that he begins to feel his own eventual transformation. The grief-stricken Zaveid thanks Eizen for saving Theodora, then promises to return the favor by killing him the day that he becomes a dragon. They exchange their true names as proof that they've entrusted their lives to each other.
During this time, Eizen also sends a vulnerable letter to Edna, detailing the truth about his life as a pirate. She writes him back with full support and understanding of his choice—a letter that he considers his greatest treasure.
Climbing the skies to where Innominat and Artorius await, the party defeats them in armatized form. Artorius perishes, and Velvet seals herself with Innominat, without whom the balance of the world lies in jeopardy. Laphicet takes his place as the new Empyrean, presenting the world with his flames of purification. The Ceremony of Suppression ends, and humans with weak resonance are no longer capable of perceiving malakhim; despite this, Eizen returns to the Van Eltia and sails alongside his crew once more.
AGE: 1000 (looks 30)
CANON POINT: Post-game
PERSONALITY:
Rokurou: But they [the rhinoceros beetle] only live for a year. The stag can survive through the winter.Eizen believes that all beings have the right to lead life in the way of their choosing. Viewing his earth affinity and curse as stifling constraints, he fights the skewed odds and charges at external obstacles with great zest, all the while respecting the independent decisions of others (regardless of his personal opinions). In a similar vein, he admires humans for making the most of their relatively short lifespans, and strives to stay true to himself by living with his curse in lieu of being enslaved to it. Eizen's creed sails parallel to his reverence for the ocean, where all is fair and the concept of ally/enemy does not apply to victims of shipwrecks.
Eizen: They live hard and die young! Is the beauty of such a life lost on you!?
Due to his travels, Eizen is a veritable treasure trove of knowledge and loves to share or brag about what he knows. He serves as a wise mentor to Laphicet in subjects across the board, earning him a paternal role within the party. However, his tendency to contribute as he pleases turns conversations on their heads, such as his claiming to like squirrels after being asked whether he prefers cats or dogs. Too, his immeasurable passion for history and the arts clouds his judgment and fosters a warped sense of what constitutes a good gift for his sister, which goes to show that he's an incorrigible nerd.
Eizen's dour image belies his clockwork routine and the quirky aspects of his personality. He always comes back from the tailor with identical outfits, needs food prepared a certain way on a certain day, and insists on docking at the same bollard each time. Eizen prefers his way to the point of being hard-pressed to change his mind, arguing that—if it means getting an underground tunnel attached to their secret base—he'll make an island to connect it. To Magilou’s surprise, he prides himself on his wit and pours his all into their performances. On the flip side, his fair skin and refined penmanship furnish his self-consciousness as a pirate, and his protectiveness of Edna goes against any semblance of rationality; Benwick claims that he tells anyone who asks, "If you touch my sister, I will kill you."
With a moral compass that's gray at best, Eizen's solution to most problems involves the pugnacious use of fisticuffs, but only in response to the same output from the opposing party. For a weak-willed knight, he breaks a finger; whereas against a resolute Zaveid, he suggests fighting with killing intent fueled by their convictions. Political impact has no bearing in his battles, but being even does. To bring salvation to those who've lost themselves, he also endorses mercy killing. Where matters of the underworld are concerned, Eizen is well-versed in their customs and tight-lipped about information for bargaining purposes.
While driven by emotions, Eizen is not without reason, though his attitude fluctuates depending on their relationship. When feelings clash with logic, he becomes irritated or evasive; his heated reaction to Phoenix's admonishment over his treatment of Edna betrays the guilt of sending her superficial letters and gifts, because he's too afraid to tell her about his piracy. The domination of emotions turns him deaf to reason, culminating in the messy three-way fight between himself, Zaveid, and Velvet’s company when he refuses to stand down; conversely, reason over the emotion of sympathy paints Eizen, unwilling to let Velvet's hysteria sabotage their mission, as frightfully frigid. Under the most ideal circumstances—the alignment of his feelings and his personal logic—Eizen is the most level-headed member of the party with unyielding resolution, fueled by a powerful sense of responsibility to his loved ones and creed.
At the end of the day, Eizen is a highly self-motivated individual whose world is shaped by his love for exploration. He thinks in terms of gains for the sake of feeling truly alive; however, he demonstrates that he can be as compassionate and thoughtful as he is ruthless and selfish.
POWERS: As a malak, Eizen is able to create, manipulate, and sense the earth; as well as utilize artes of varying elements. His unique skills (break souls) grant him a draconic aura with mild aerial capacity. He can also detect the presence of nearby spiritual energy, and his blessing, a passive ability that he refers to as a curse, promotes growth by generating trials for those within his domain.
In low-frequently worlds, all of these powers will be lost.
OTHER:
- Eizen carries a coin with the faces of a goddess and a demon king that serves as his vessel, which mitigates the amount of malevolence he absorbs from humans.
- As a malak, he doesn't need to eat or sleep and will not die of old age. Those with weak resonance cannot see or hear him. On the flip side, prayer and faith toward Eizen strengthen his domain . . . which is probably not what anybody wants, but yeah.
- Eizen has difficulty attending to tasks associated with the element of water, such as swimming (he uses floaties).
- Due to the perilous nature of his blessing, he's known as the Reaper.
GAME INFO;
MAGIC ABILITY: Mana amplification - Bestows a temporary burst of mana unto the user for enhanced physical attributes and artes; however, his luck will tank for one (1) isolated event within the next 24 hours and reset once the incident occurs. His artes will only see an improvement in high-frequency worlds, as he cannot use them in low-frequency worlds.
PRICE: Edna's Reply - "A letter conveying a sister's love for her brother, if not written with the most grace."
ACCLIMATION: 9. Eizen is a born-and-bred adventurer who's accustomed to journeying to far-off shores; in fact, he covets exploring uncharted waters. He'd tackle the new environment with a steadfast drive to do what it takes to return to his world.
