History: Wiki
Personality: Picture your most loyal and kind friend—the one who's been through thick and thin by your side since you were children, who absorbs your dream as his own in full support of you, and who understands you the most. Now picture the friend you're embarrassed to tell others about. You've got Gaelio, the good and the bad.
Per McGillis, Gaelio is whom we'd consider a pure person brimming with good intentions. He's sociable with a knack for banter, curious about the social lives of his acquaintances, and very fair in spite of (or perhaps thanks to) his strong sense of pride. Do him a favor, and he'll pay it forward tenfold; start off on the right foot, and he'll give you all the benefit of the doubt in the world. This kindness, of course, comes under the condition that the good will is returned in kind: Misconduct of the corrupt variety is a huge no-no, and he'll gloat when you get called out for offering a bribe.
On the flipside, Gaelio is straightforward to the point of ignorance. While he navigates the everyday politics of Gjallarhorn with casual grace, he would in the same turn suggest interrogating a corrupt official based on pure speculation. As for his views, Gjallarhorn's lifelong influence manifests in his extreme intolerance for those who've undergone the Alaya-Vijnana procedure: He believes, per the organization, that humans must remain natural. This value brings out the worst in him, from insensitive remarks to derogatory nicknames that earn him his antagonist stripes, all exacerbated by his heated feelings toward Tekkadan for starting off on the wrong foot with its ace pilot.
Gaelio is prone to frustration and being impulsive at the worst of times; however, his pride grants him a tireless drive. Next to the likes of McGillis, he seems fairly average, if not downright plain, but Gaelio is not one to feel jealous or inadequate—only miffed should McGillis make an unintentional dig at his skill. While his pride bites upon provocation, he possesses a healthy scooping of confidence and resilience (to a point, as he's revealed to be poorly equipped to handle being backstabbed), and he's really quite good at what he does.
All in all, Gaelio is a good guy, but also without a doubt the product of his environment. And this is why he's the best friend you want to hide inside the closet when other people visit.
Canon Powers: None
Game powers: Technopathy! He inputs and receives data through a mental interface when in contact with a computer, boosting performance in a manner not unlike the Alaya-Vijnana System. This requires physical contact to use. The downsides are that he can't make anything function beyond its natural limit; and because his brain capacity is still human, he can only handle so much data before backlashes become apparent (e.g., epistaxis).
Abilities: As an inspector for a peacekeeping military organization and the heir to a lofty family name, Gaelio is well-versed in his duties (including inspection, piloting, and leading) and diplomacy. Due to the nature of his work, he has experience in outer space environments.
Setting: With his background, Gaelio should have an easy time adapting to the environment, though fitting in with the organization's individual members could be hit or miss with his strong opinions. I hope to find both friends and those with whom he'd be at odds, and see how he develops from his current mindset.
SAMPLES
Prose Sample: Your character is with the team at a fancy diplomatic party and a UP dignitary (a Coluan, naturally, because man, the entire planet of Colu seems to be chock full of arrogant dicks) has called into question the character's ability to be a Legionnaire and whether or not they, some weirdo interdimensional stranger, have the personal character to help protect the United Planets. How do they respond?
It should be expected, he supposed, for a native person to voice skepticism over a foreigner's abilities. Even knowing this, however, Gaelio felt a tinge of annoyance, which he summarily smothered beneath a genial smile as he bent forward with a hand laid over his chest.
"Please rest assured. As an officer from a peacekeeping organization, the safety of the universes is my highest priority." His lips widening the smile, he lifted his head to meet the dignitary's eyes. "But we're fortunate to have someone so vigilant among us. Thank you for your honesty. I'll just have to further apply myself to become a Legionnaire worthy of serving the United Planets."
Dimly, he wondered if there was good wine to be found in the vicinity. He could do with a glass or two. Parties like these tended to attract exhausting characters, and too many were wont to question his competency to the point it was starting to become repetitive. At least legitimate questions were far more welcoming next to Gjallarhorn's penchant for distasteful gossip.
He felt the welling of a chuckle in his chest, lingering just under the surface. He should probably not be so hard on the dignitary.
"Excuse me," he said, straightening. "I don't want to take too much of your time. Please enjoy the rest of the party."
Network Sample: Welcome to the Legion, rookie. As a way of helping your character cope with their circumstances and have an optimistic outlook towards the future, the existing Legionnaires want them to record a message to their future self with their thoughts on their current situation, what they hope to accomplish in their time with the Legion, and the first thing they want to do when they get sent safely home or to the dimension of their choice.
[The feed starts, featuring Gaelio. He starts with his gaze off-center, and it wanders until he seems to find the right place to look. He squares his shoulders.]
All right. This is Specialist Major Gaelio Bauduin of Gjallarhorn . . . now Legionnaire of the United Planets. This is a message for myself. I've got a few questions to answer.
Let's see. [His eyes drift to the side in thought.] The current situation is a complicated one, but what's really interesting is the people. I just got here, and I've already lost count of how many species there are. Not all of them look like humans, either . . . I'm still not sure of what to make of it. What would McGillis think?
Anyway, if I'm to make it back to Gjallarhorn, I'm going to have to cooperate with the United Planets. Keeping the peace isn't too far off from my original job description, so it should be fine. I suppose that I'll have to get better acquainted with these so-called powers I was granted upon arrival, too, though I'd rather do without them. [With a half-hearted scowl, he looks aside in a deliberate motion.] I've gotten this far; why should I rely on something that doesn't naturally belong to me?
[He lets out a faint sigh. That's enough of that. Instead, he raises a clenched fist in show of resolution.]
As for when I get sent back to my dimension . . . That's right—I'm going to find Ein and go after Tekkadan! Just you wait, you space rats. You won't escape the reaches of Gjallarhorn for long. I'll definitely return to my home world!
